At least 10 people have reportedly been killed in clashes in Indian-controlled Kashmir, despite the deployment of thousands of troops in an attempt to bring recent violence in the territory under control.
Two of the dead were civilians killed after troops fired on a protest against Indian rule in the town of Anantnag, 55km south of the main city of Srinagar.
"Two teenagers were killed when paramilitary forces opened fire to disperse a violent demonstration," a police officer told the AFP news agency.
Earlier five suspected anti-government fighters and three soldiers had died during a battle after crossing the frontier from the Pakistani-controlled area of Kashmir, the military said.
Tensions have been high across the predominantly-Muslim Himalayan region during nearly three weeks of demonstrations against the killing of Kashmiris by Indian security forces.
The latest violence began with the death of a schoolboy on June 11.
"When incidents like this happen, when innocents get killed, people get provoked," Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the leader of the Separatist Hurriyet Conference, told Al Jazeera.
"I think the way the government dealing with the situation is again a total act of aggression."
